can someone explain me this x+y = x^y + 2*(x&y) how does this hold good

x+y = x^y + 2*(x&y), so here why are we multiplying it with 2, here we are trying to figure out why an addition is equal to xor or the 2 numbers and then the multiplication of x&y but multiplied with 2?
